We are approaching the end of our 1st year. Your help in making available photos and memories has been invaluable. On the 15th July (our usual coffee morning from 10 am till 12 noon) we are holding our first AGM. If anyone wants to raise any questions they can send it in beforehand or raise it on the day. We are also having a general quiz on our heritage. Please get your thinking caps on. Subscription fees were due on June 1st and have remained unchanged from the 1st year. A maker of roads
This was the heading in the Cannock Advertiser on the passing of a notable resident of Great Wyrley, who died on the 19th September 1931. His grandson Austin Reaney gave us a cutting from the paper; it contained six long paragraphs on the history of this man, and made fascinating reading. Continue reading “A maker of roads”
A walk around the village
It’s so simple, Great Wyrley has an active club which does just that, it’s healthy and gets one out of the house for a couple of hours. Then there is the walk on the 1st of January each year, which they call ‘Beating the Bounds’, helpful for getting the previous nights excesses out of the system. It meets at the Scout and Guides Centre on the Walsall Rd; many do it, wrapped up, plus a good pair of stout boots. Through the fields at the rear of the Star Public House, onwards and across the Wash brook and making a return journey across open heath and back towards Jones’s Lane then returning to the centre for an hot beverage, a good couple of hours, then back home to put your feet up, but this wasn’t the extent of the ‘Bounds’ as we shall see.
